Born in Prince George, raised in New Westminster Work in the City of Vancouver
I grew up in a labour driven, grassroots activist family. Taught at a young age that if you see something you do not agree with you need to speak up -- otherwise you are considered in agreement. Learning throughout my life that Union’s can truly help workers to be successful, to address safety issues, to support and push back against bully and harassment in the workplace. Unions continue to work toward pay equity, human rights and diversification in the workplace.
I began shop stewarding in 2009 while still working as an auxiliary worker. Volunteering a lot of time due to the nature of auxiliary work and the structure of our Union local. Over these early years I was mentored by some powerful women in Brenda Coombs and Barb Dickenson who embodied what selfless activism looked like. Supporting our members because that is what they needed. Encouraged and supported by these women I took on more responsibilities in our Local.
2014 was a big year! Not even yet returned from maternity leave and I was nominated and acclaimed to sit on the Executive as the Park Sector Rep. I stayed in this position until 2021 when I chose to step aside and introduce someone new to the position so they too could have some experience at the table. The more people that know and understand how things work, the better off our local is as a whole.
I also was nominated and elected by my peers to the Lead Shop Steward in the Parks Sector which I hold currently. I took a brief hiatus in 2018 when I was seconded to the United Way, returning to the Lead Steward role in 2021. While seconded to the United Way - I was invited onto the Labour Cabinet because the management there recognized my strong Labour Voice and wanted to ensure my talent was being put to good use.
As mentioned on another page - I was nominated and elected to several bargaining committees, holding progressively more responsible roles in each round. I was part of the New & Young Workers Committee (currently defunct) where we accomplished out-reach and community building amongst all our membership.
During all of this I have always continued my education:
Degree in Child and Youth Care Counseling
Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
Advanced Baccalaureate in Human Resources Management
In addition to these credit courses I have and continue to take additional training on health and safety and reconciliation.
