PROMISE FOR ACCOUNTABILITY

It’s time to bring back grassroots movements and utilize the energy and vision of our membership to initiate meaningful change for our local, the membership and our communities as a whole.

Before going into the minutia, I think it is important to acknowledge that part of being a great leader is being able to connect with people, respect where they are coming from and find the common ground that we can start from. I know that it is not possible to agree with everyone’s point of view - but it is possible to continue to treat everyone with respect and dignity while we try and find our common ground and look to building ourselves a stronger local.

CUPE National Constitution

  • Ensure as a Local that we are in line with the National Constitution

  • Confirm our bylaws and polices are congruent with the National Constitution

Bylaws and Policies

  • Follow all bylaws and policies set out by the Local membership and Executive members

  • Implement changes to the bylaws or policies that would provide for more transparency and accountability to the membership

  • Take the time to explain the processes to our membership so they have the power to suggest or implement changes when they see areas for improvement

Committees

  • Implement a standard process to apply and be appointed to local committees – this process would see a regular rotation of members being provided the opportunity to represent our membership on specialized topics and areas of interest to them

  • Create mirror committees to CUPE National and CUPE BC

  • Support our members in applying for committees with CUPE National, CUPE BC and other union affiliations to ensure that our voice - CUPE Local 15’s voice is heard on a larger stage

Conventions

  • Keep us well organized an aware of up coming conventions so that we may ensure a full complement of delegates can attend

  • Work with all delegates and committees to submit strong, well thought out resolutions to present to convention floor

  • Ensure new convention delegates understand the importance of their role at convention and support them during the experience

  • Create opportunities for more members to experience conventions and learn how these events guide the direction of CUPE and other governing bodies

Working with others and working with you

  • Be accessible by providing a detailed schedule to the office so that members will know when they can connect with their President

  • After each month is over - provide a detailed account of all engagements over the month (respecting individual privacy when needed)

  • Encourage activism in all our sectors by reaching out and getting directly involved - leading by example.

  • Commit to be engaged with the governing bodies that manage our collective agreements: City Council, Vancouver Parks Board, Vancouver School Board, Ministry of Health, Community Centre Associations and or Organizational Boards

  • Attend and build strong relationship with our affiliations: Vancouver District Labour Council, CUPE Metro, BC Federation of Labour, and any others that we look to be connected to

  • Utilize the expertise in the CUPE 15 office to address our members' issues and concerns

Financial transparency

  • Ensure that all expenditures, including additional expenses (motions from the Executive or motions from the membership) will be attached to a passed motion, bylaw, or policy

  • Encourage our Trustees to complete a thorough examination of our financial books every month and make their regular reports to CUPE National

  • Bring large financial motions to the membership allowing input and direction from you

  • ENSURE OUR SWAG IS BOUGHT FROM A UNION SHOP - AND IF NOT UNION LOCALLY MADE
